Where do we begin?

So what movie gets the all important title of 'First Blog' by some random dude who has nothing better to do then write down his personal opinions to no one in particular? Well the simple solution would be to pick my favourite movie and choose that...right? Nah, let's go to the possible no.2

THE DESCENT
Neil Marshall's 'The Descent' is an extremely chilled movie from start to finish. For me it turned into the movie that I'd have to recommend to friends. Screw 'em if they don't like it, let's get the word out and hope that they wanna discuss it afterward.
If you've seen the trailer but not the movie you'd have a fair idea as to how it goes. Adventurous girls go on a caving expedition, but find themselves trapped underground after a cave in with no real knowledge of how to get out. Now this is the opening half and already I'm in. The direction the story is going in has me involved, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Unfortunately for the girls though, what happens next isn't pretty. I don't want to give anything away but they're not alone down there and it's going to be an even greater struggle to get out the originally thought.
This happened to be the first Neil Marshall film I'd seen, not that he's been involved in a lot but I had heard about Dog Soldiers before but hadn't seen it. Lucky for me though after watching this one, I quickly became a fan of his work. Since then I've enjoyed not only Dog Soldiers but also Doomsday, which isn't considered as good but fuck it, I enjoyed it.
After reading all of the reviews on the internet and DVD cover, it became clear that this was fairly highly regarded by critics which isn't always a good thing. When it comes to Horror flicks in particular, public opinion should be taken before that of a critic. Turns out though that their opinion was spot on, addressing that 'The Descent' gives off a similar vibe to that of 'Alien'.
Neil Marshall's directing was outstanding also, and I think he does a sweet job of this in all his films. With 3/4 of it shot in an underground environment with no lighting, the use of helmet torches and flares leads to some genuinely creepy action. This is the kind of thing that I'm looking for in a suspense/horror. There's nothing scary about the blood and gore aspect, but suspense and bad situations can creates chills down your spine.

Do I think this is a great movie? Yes. Do I think it deserves to be up there with the greats? No. In terms of how I feel, the movie is a perfect rendition of what the script goes out to achieve. If somebody came to me with this idea, I don't think I could do much more then what has already been done. It's 90 minutes of entertainment, and that's what I and I hope everybody else is looking for.

8/10
